    The Beta58 is more open and natural.
    The SM people just know for so long so they got used to the sound and flavour. The Beta series in general is really good! Brings out details.
    Technically a better output level.

  • @tom_k_d
    @tom_k_d 6 лет назад +36

    Most important differences:
    1) Beta58 Supercardioid, SM58 Cardiod - so the Beta58 shows a significantly more directed pickup pattern, which can be good or bad, depending on how much you can control your mic positon and how the monitors are set up (cardioid is least sensitive on the rear, supercardioid is least sensitive on the sides).
    2) Beta58 has a significantly higher output level at similar SPL - if you are working with less expensive preamps this can be a big advantage. With the SM58, it depends a lot on the preamp used if you get pro level results or not.
    3) Beta58 has an extended high frequency response, it's high mids / low highs ('presence') are a little faint, but can be easily EQed in, as it takes EQ very well.
    4) Overall built quality is better at the Beta58: Hardenend grill, better damping of handling noise.
    In combination with midrange gear (Focusrite Scarlett series interfaces for example) I prefer the Beta58, as the missing mid / presence peak (it's only 'disadvantge' compare to the SM58) can be EQed in easily, but the higher output level is a real advantage: It gives you a better signal to noise ratio. If you use high end gear with good preamps the SM58 can deliver excellent results, too, though when the budget is big enough you'd rather go with a high-end handheld condenser instead (for example Neumann KMS105), unless you are very loud on stage...

      @paulheartsongs 5 лет назад +1

      tom k d Thank you Tom. I found the Beta58 had more problems in various live situations than the SM58, to the point where we retired the Beta. It was a loud live rock band. I preferred the brighter sound but it was impractical when playing 3 to 4 different venues each week :(
      As you said both mics take EQ very well!
      I could certainly hear handling noise for both mics in this basic comparison. A more rigorous A/B setup would be interesting.

      Great info man... would you mind giving your 2 cents on shure sm86 vs shure beta 58? Which one would you buy for a strong female voice for live performances?

    • @tom_k_d
      @tom_k_d 8 месяцев назад

      @@miagy420 I'd always pic a solid dynamic over an entry level condenser - these tend to lack mid range body. You can try the Beta57, too, if you want a more open top end: Beta57 and Beta58 share the same capsule and body, just the grill is different. Beta57 has no foam inside - it's more sensitive to plosives, but offers a more open top end. You can convert between the two but just changing the grill: spare part grills are available for both versions.

      It's because they immitate an existing sound. They actually don't know how to speak without accents or just don't bother to.. because they don't know how to handle it without singing. But the sound of vocals is easy to replicate.

    Nice vocals Flavio. I like how there is less roll-off from the beta when you turn slightly away from the mic. I would have thought that this might create more feedback to the speakers, but that must be the magic of super-cardioid! There is a slightly less mellow sound from the beta; I guess this is what they call "brighter". All in all a good review!

  • @909Thumper909
    @909Thumper909 6 лет назад +14

    Weather he meant to or not, he definitely emphasized the AEEE sound in "need somebody like you" a lot more in the second take. Probably subconsciously highlighting the claimed brightness but the equipment should be able to speak for its self in such a demo. It would be a far more fair comparison to have had them both next to each other in a slightly off axis setup w his voice aimed between the two. Like a stereo recording but on tow comparable tracks. Also... he doesn't mention any difference in screen flavoring :P

    Good evening, I congratulate you on your channel and your valuable advice!
    I am a singing enthusiast with a good vocal timbre, and I need some advice for karaoke singing at a good level, using a JBL PartyBox 120 speaker, but with limited ability to adjust the microphone’s equalization. I prefer genres such as Italian singer-songwriters and light music (Pooh, Red Canzian, Antonello Venditti, Francesco De Gregori, Carosone, Gino Paoli, etc.). Would you recommend: Beta 58A (which I already own, but I find it not warm enough and it may make my voice a bit nasal in the mid-highs), SM58 (which seems warmer and truer to my vocal timbre but perhaps less bright), Sennheiser e845, Sennheiser e935, or e945 (which I am not familiar with at all)?
    Thank you in advance for your reply!

    Be interesting to know how they compare for a female voice.
    I love sm58.
    I think many years ago I tried beta 58 and the brightness it adds to a male voice translated to a bit thin and ‘toppy’ on my very female voice. Anybody else know about this?

      I agree, sm58 sounds and feels fuller to my ears whilst perhaps the beta58 sounds brighter and louder.
      Also, I’ve never had am sm58 break in years and years of use (and abuse) whilst my first beta58 lasted me about 6months only before its xlr pin connectors went loose and it had to be sent back to shure for repairing.

My guess is the beta may produce clearer and sharper synthesised and digitally created sounds, but I think vocals will be purer on the original SM 58, which has been the go-to since the late 60s. Flavio also says the beta produces less feedback which is really only an issue for performance. Hope some of this makes sense! I can't decide if the beta is worth the extra investment.
